What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? A Plain-English Guide
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude — can find it, quote it, and cite you as the source. Where classic SEO competes for a ranked list of blue links, AEO competes for a sentence inside a generated answer.
Why AEO is different from SEO
Search engines rank pages; answer engines quote passages. An answer engine reads your page, extracts a claim, and attributes it. That changes what wins: direct, self-contained answers beat long buildups, and a page that defines a term in its first paragraph beats one that teases the definition after 800 words of story.
The overlap is real too — answer engines browse via traditional search indexes, so a page that ranks nowhere is also invisible to AI. AEO sits on top of SEO; it does not replace it.
The five changes that actually matter
First, answer the question in the first sentence of the relevant section — the way this article defines AEO in its first line. Second, use FAQ and definition patterns with FAQPage and Article structured data (JSON-LD), which gives engines machine-readable question-answer pairs. Third, keep one idea per heading so a passage can be lifted cleanly. Fourth, publish original numbers, comparisons, or definitions — engines prefer citing a source that adds something. Fifth, make sure Bing can crawl you: Bing’s index feeds ChatGPT browsing, so register in Bing Webmaster Tools, not just Google Search Console.
How to check if it is working
Ask the engines your target questions and see who gets cited. Perplexity shows sources on every answer; ChatGPT shows them when browsing; Google AI Overviews link the pages they draw from. If a competitor is cited for a question you answer better, compare structures — usually the cited page answers in one extractable paragraph and yours does not.
AEO is also sometimes called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — same practice, different acronym. Whichever name you use, the work is identical: be the cleanest, most citable answer to a question people actually ask.
